Me Made Meh… I mean, May
Next post
Do you know about Me Made May? Since I sew and follow a number of sewist bloggers (blogging sewists?), I’ve known about it for a couple of years now, but this is the first year when I felt like I had enough homemade clothes to do it. The idea behind it is that you show off homemade clothing during the month of May.
You might wear something you made each day. Maybe you only wear a few homemade clothes some days in May. Ideally, you post on social about it, so other people can share in your superiority and over-achievedness… but maybe I’m getting off track.
The thing about May is this: it has been amazing. The weather has been fantastic. So if I wanted to have an excuse for not wearing certain items I’ve made because of the weather – It’s too hot! It’s too cold! – I’ve got nothing. But we’re almost halfway through the month and I haven’t been able to make myself put on my homemade clothes, let alone photograph myself in them. I think I’ve worn something homemade once or twice, if we don’t include my altered pants.
Here’s the thing. It’s an overarching theme in my life. When there is something I feel like I’m supposed to be doing, I don’t want to do it. Even things that are totally optional and just for fun. I know it is childish, but it’s one of those little things I have control over.
I’ve got some fantastic homemade clothes. They are comfortable, and they look good. Because I made them based on my own measurements, they fit just right. I picked out the fabric myself, so there is just no reason not to wear and love them.
But somehow, seeing these other super ladies in my Insta feed wearing amazing clothes THEY made… just makes me wilt into a puddle of failure and indecisiveness.
So, photos of me in my handmade clothes? This is all I’ve got. Photo credits go to Two, who took these rather gleefully while crowing about Seven’s cuteness. I’m wearing a Gemma tank from Made By Rae, in navy blue rayon with homemade bias tape in some pretty quilting cotton with little herbs or something on it. It’s super understated, but the bias tape gives it a little kick which always makes me smile.
Hopefully this won’t be my only effort for Me Made May, but if it is, you’ll know why.
