This past week, I met with a mediation coach to talk about how I can be a better communicator, specifically in regards to my family relationships.

The two-hour virtual meeting was exhausting, but I came away with some new tools to practice. I can’t figure out why we don’t teach these skills to everyone while they’re in school.

I’m seeking out resources to begin honing my listening and conflict resolution skills. I’m bringing the kids along for the ride. They already practice their communication skills on each other every day, and maybe exposure to some new methods will reduce shouting and door slamming.

As we continue to do the work on antiracism, we’re going to make mistakes even while trying to get it right.

If you don’t want to drive yourself crazy, you have to accept that there will be times when perhaps you should have spoken up and didn’t, or should have stayed quiet, but didn’t, and instead said something idiotic. Or worse, said something that might have been idiotic, but you can’t be sure.

Each day, it seems like we are rewriting another segment of history by adding the silenced chapters – particularly from BIPOC and women. We’re experiencing an opportunity to flesh history out so that the stars aren’t just white guys. The beauty of it is, the stars were never just white guys.

Take Elizebeth Friedman, born in 1892. She became one of the pioneer code breakers at a time when the CIA and the FBI were just coming in to being.
