Music for Mister Moon
It’s been a while since I featured a children’s book, and this is one I haven’t even read to my kids yet. I was immediately drawn to the cover illustration of Music for Mister Moon, by Philip C. Stead, illustrated by Erin E. Stead (I’m a sucker for a husband and wife team).
Inside, I found a dreamy and imaginative story about a girl who is stuck. With illustrations that are both tender and surreal, she works out her problems and ends up in a most unusual place.
I liked the way the book explored the girl’s interior life. After being repeatedly poked by fate, she is finally willing to set down her own desires and explore being stuck until she finds a way out, guided along the way by compassionate folks who have taken the road before. The book was strange, introspective, and endearing. I hope my kids agree.
