Sunday School in Buccoo
Next post
Last night, our last Sunday here on this trip, we decided to finally sneak out and go to Sunday School in Buccoo.
What I really want to see is live steel pan, and Sunday School is supposed to have it.
The bedtime process stretched out forever. That has become par for the course this trip. The event supposedly starts from 6 p.m., with steel pan starting at around 9. We didn’t get there till 10:30 p.m. If there was steel pan earlier, by that time, there was no sign of it. An unseen DJ was blasting a rotating mix of soca and U.S. dance music from different eras.
Clouds of weed smoke floated around, and waves splashed up on the rocky area below us. Boats floated in the shallow water, and the horizon glowed with an unnatural light.
There were stands with local food, and a tight crowd around a table where people were gambling near the water.
There weren’t many people dancing when we got there, but by the time we left around 11:30, the dance floor was full. The music was earsplitting, and just ok for me. With a brother-in-law who is an amazing DJ, and another family friend here who also knows how to spin, my standards are pretty high.
We stood by the water and people watched, then walked around the area to see if we’d missed anything. We saw a pan yard, but again, no indication that anything had been happening there earlier.
Sunday School was a little disappointing. I would like to try again on another trip and try to get there a little earlier (or perhaps stay later?). The reviews of the event are very mixed, which makes me think that some weeks are better than others, and maybe we were just there for a week when things weren’t amazing.
All that aside, as far as date nights go, it was a really nice one. We hung out, walked around, and spent time together. It will probably go down as one of my favorites.
Is there a saying, it doesn’t matter where you are, it’s who you’re with?
